I found this writing exercise in the latest issue of Dramatics magazine (a teenage theater magazine) and I thought it was perfect for creative writing club, despite me not having been to too many meeting or doing my creative writing:
1. You have to come in prepared with a few things. First, pick a place, something with multiple locations like a street, a town, etc. Make sure you know a lot about the place- what's around it, who lives there, what does it look like, smell like, sound like. You need to bring in the following things related to your place: - A Picture - A statistic (Has five megachurches, has mostly Latinos, etc.) on an index card - A factoid or anecdote on an index card - An artifact or object from or related to the place.
2. Everyone sits in a circle. You pass the photo to the person sitting on your left, and pass the index cards to the person sitting on your left. Trade artifacts with the person sitting directly across from you.
3. Spend twenty minutes writing (the magazine says a scene, but for us it could be a short story) about the artifact, the picture, and one of the index cards. Share them with the group and compare what the true meanings of the places are, and the people's interpretations.
