(As taken from Ms. Lawrence's email)
I wanted to give you a quick recap of the meeting yesterday in case you missed it, and let you know about a few thoughts/things coming up. Yesterday we used a writing prompt provided by Mr. Hutcheson. The prompt was a cover of an old New Yorker magazine which depicted people alone on the Subway all daydreaming about various things. Several students did really interesting things with the prompt, and it was fascinating to hear the different directions that people took with it.
After this we opened the floor to people wanting to share their writing to get feedback. We heard a new twist on the 3 little pigs story involving the business mogul AIG, a piece on a dystopian society, and a seemingly straightforward story about a relationship with a twist ending that was juxtaposed with the song "Another One Bites the Dust." You guys provided great comments and feedback!
Other things: We're looking into using an on-line forum for writing submissions. More on this later. Also, Nathan suggested we do some type of "club" activities beyond meeting and reading. So, I need you all to brainstorm for this. What would you like the club to do or see? We could look into local writing conventions and possibly plan a trip, we could host a poetry reading (although I know Epiphany does this as well), or any number of things. Think about it and let us know what you come up with at the next meeting. Kind of in relation to this, Relay for Life will start raising money soon, and they're encouraging every club at school to take an active part in fundraising. Can you think of any ways that we could raise money through the Creative Writing club?
Another suggestion was made during the meeting that we'll try to implement soon. At our next meeting we will likely allow you all to submit work anonymously for feedback. I'll give you the details later, but hopefully this should give you the chance to get feedback without reading a piece to the entire club.
If I remember correctly, Ms Lawrence also mentioned brainstorming ideas for the next meeting. If you have some ideas, go onto the thread for the next meeting and post there. (Just go back to meetings, then click on "Third Meeting-Nov. 12").
As far as this meeting goes, if anyone has any comments, feel free you post a reply here!
